Location: Longshaw Estate, just outside of Sheffield
Join me for this fun, practical, relaxed half day course aimed at total beginners, covering an overview of maps and map reading. This will be a small group with a maximum ratio of 6:1. The aim of this half day course is to help you understand the basics so that you'll gain the skills and confidence to plan your own walks.
Topics covered will include:-
Identifying features
Understanding map scales
Measuring distance
Orientation
Finding direction
Introduction to the compass
We will spend the first half of the morning indoors looking at the maps, understanding features and planning a route (with coffee!). The rest of the morning will be spent 'hands-on' outdoors, applying what we have learned and following the route that we have planned together.
Maps and compasses will be provided so you'll just need to bring a pen, some paper to make notes, your usual walking gear and some water.
Let's get you out there with your newly-acquired skills and confidence!
